Sloppy gearstick movement on your 924, 944 or 968?
One of the causes can be a worn out ball cup bush at the bottom of your gear lever.
The bottom of the gear lever has a ball stud, a metal ball which is attached to the base of the lever, which pivots within the ball cup sold here.
If this ball cup is worn or cracked, the result is sloppy play within the ball cup, and more motion of the gear lever required to change from one gear to another.
Changing it just requires..
- Lifting the gear lever leather gaitor and lifting it along with the gear knob off of the gear lever. For this there is usually a spring clip holding the knob onto the lever.
- Removing the round clip, retaining the pin from the lever, into the rod that goes back to the transmission.
- If you now look down the gear lever, you will see there is a black oval metal bracket, with two bolt heads which will visible.
- Undo these two bolts, and lift the gear lever out.
- Pull the old ball cup bush off of the bottom of the lever.
- Fit the new ball cup bush
- Bolt the gear lever back onto the torque tube you removed it from.
- Reconnect the pin of the gear lever to the rod that goes back to the transmission, and refit the round retaining clip.
- Refit the gear knob and gaitor.
That is all there is to it.
