Although the 944 is one of the greatest Porsche cars ever made (partly due to its 20 year development and evolution) the gear change mechanism has a couple of design defects.
One of the defects is the gear selection mechanism mounted to the transmission at the back of the car. In particular the use of rubber mountings and a nylon block mounted onto a mild steel mechanism, which due to rusting and wear, makes the gear change sloppy at best, through to very baggy and not precise at worse!
The 9XX QuickShifts (road and race versions) benefit from years of development resulting in a completely new design incorporating aircraft quality rose/spherical joints and construction made entirely in stainless steel and billet aluminium.
The Road version is designed to replicate the original shift distance (and therefore effort) but to make gear selection very precise and smooth, which in turn allows for faster gear changes.
The Race version enjoys all the benefits of the road version, but with a much reduced travel for even faster gear selection.
We also advise also changing the front lever assembly for the 9XX updated version, which replaces the original (probably worn out) mild steel pin, with a new lever with a stainless steel pin which is not prone to the rusting and wear issues of the original one. Although this is not required for fitting of this item.
